Hi,
I retired as a Team Leader last year and now work 2 days in a different team ad a Band 5 district nurse. Having had experience for many years as a Team Leader I am able to give you my honest views and answers to your questions.
* There are not enough experienced Band 5 nurses in the teams. The teams are presently too large.
*No there is insufficient time to provide the best care for patients. This is due to increase demand and numbers of patients to see in a limited time. The impact of other disciplines requesting to complete assessments e.g CHC (Continuing Health Care) , Palliative nurses requesting Fast Track paperwork before care can be provided and wound care nurses assess for treatment but do not complete the care plan. All these impact on district nursing time.
* The administrative support is variable in different teams some have 20hours and other have more or less.
*Most nurses have a mobile device however new staff have to wait until availability. The devices need updating to something like an iPad for easier use.
* To help the district nursing teams I feel that it would be beneficial to have smaller teams e.g. 1 x Band7, 3 x Band 6, 8 x Band 5, 2 x HCSW and 1 x phlebotomist.
The team I had initially was very small consisting of 6.5 staff When I retired my team consisted of 24 staff.
Regards
xxxx
